France is one of the birthplaces of modern democracy. Sparked by the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, a new nation fought to eliminate its feudal past. As a result, a novel calendar, the Calendrier Républicain, was inaugurated. Year I marked the establishment of the French Republic. The months were named after the weather. Each day was named after “the real treasures of the rural economy”. Weekdays and the time were decimalized.
